Born in Victoria in 1859, Alfred Walsh moved to Dunedin in New Zealand with his family as a child. He studied at the Dunedin Art School, and after a job as draughtsman in the Public Works Department for a time, worked as a lecturer at the Canterbury School of Art until 1910. He exhibited with the Otago Art Society from 1883 and Canterbury Society of Arts from 1889. In 1912 Walsh moved to Auckland and exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts.
The total number of works by Alfred Walsh offered for sale by auction since 1977 is 117, of which 82 (70%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,626 for Old Sailing Club Near North Head sold by International Art Centre in July 2001. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Alfred Walsh are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery and Museum Of New Zealand.
