Timothy (Tim) Messack (Timofej Mesac) was born in Chenyhiw (Chernihiv), Ukraine in 1915. He spent time in a German Labor camp in WW2 and arrived in Melbourne on the SS Protea on 23 Sept 1948. He spent two years in Bonegilla Camp serving his two-year contract in Victoria as a woodcutter and car assembler. By 1952 he was living at Grange in South Australia and worked as a house painter. He had a solo exhibition sponsored by the Good Neighbor Council in Laubman and Pank’s Curzon Gallery in Gawler Place, Adelaide. Also in 1952 he received an honourable mention at the New Australian Cultural Association art show in Sydney and entered the Dunlop Art Prize competition with his entry being reproduced in the Dunlop Rubber Co. calendar for 1953. In 1952 he exhibited in the spring and autumn shows at the Royal SA Society of the Arts (RSASA) gallery and then had a solo artist exhibition in 1953. His strength at that stage was portraiture and in 1953 he entered a self-portrait in the Archibald Prize that is now in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He continued working in South Australia exhibiting in regional shows into the 1980s, and passed away in 1998.
