Born in England in 1830, Morton Allport arrived in Hobart with his parents as an infant. He studied painting with his mother, Mary Morton Allport and with J Skinner Prout. He was also a naturalist and photographer, but earned his living as a solicitor. His photographs of Tasmanian scenery are among the earliest held in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. Allport had a major hand in organising exhibitions, including the Hobart Town Art Treasures Exhibition in 1858. His work is also represented in the National Library of Australia.
