Alan Taylor, born in 1933 in England, embarked on a transformative journey that led him to New Zealand in 1952 at the age of 20. His immersion in Maori culture began upon his arrival in New Zealand, and he gained recognition for his vibrant landscapes that frequently draw inspiration from this cultural influence. Diversifying his pursuits, Taylor delved into journalism and freelance writing. He held membership in the NZ Archaeologists' Society and showcased his versatility through involvement in industrial design and his role as a political cartoonist for various radical magazines. Hailing from Mangere, his remarkable journey is chronicled in a biographical article within 'Art New Zealand,' issue no. 49 (Summer 1988/89), pages 44-45. Taylor's life took a dramatic turn as he participated in the Korean War (1950-1953) as a British soldier within the combined Commonwealth forces. His experiences turned deeply harrowing, enduring years of captivity within North Korean and Chinese prison camps. Following his release, he was repatriated to Britain, where he soon embarked on a new chapter by immigrating to New Zealand. In his newfound homeland, Taylor's fascination with Maori art and history blossomed. Immersing himself in the culture, he frequented marae, which further enriched his understanding. Taylor's passion culminated in the creation of several impactful books on Maori art and history, most notably 'Maori Folk Art.'
