Gavin Hipkins was born in 1968 in Auckland. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia. He works with photography and the moving image and held his first solo exhibition in 1995 in Palmerston North. Since then he has held solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand and in Brisbane and Sydney. He has participated in group exhibitions and film screenings in the United States, Australia, The Netherlands, Scotland and Germany. In 2000 he received the inaugural Art Waikato National Art Competition Award which included research travel to the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles USA and in 2007 was awarded the McCahon Arts Residency at McCahon House in Auckland funded by the McCahon Trust and Creative New Zealand. He has received a number of Arts Grants from Creative New Zealand and is currently Associate Professor at Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $35,480 for The Next Cabin sold by Art+Object in June 2011. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
