Born in Melbourne in 1945, Paul Margoscy started painting in 1974 and in 1978 decided to specialise in birds and wildlife. He is largely self-taught but did study for three years in the UK and Europe. He has exhibited his work since 1983 in Melbourne, Sydney, United States, Japan, Singapore and London. In 1986 and 1994, he won the award for the best picture at the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia’s exhibition, and in 1987 he won the best watercolour prize. He was commissioned by Australia Post in 1991 to illustrate a stamp series, and by the United Nations for a similar series in 1994. He was one of 80 out of 3500 entries selected to exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Birds In Art in 1995 and 1996. In May 2020 he was one of the Australian artists selected to exhibit in Fabriano Acquarello Watercolour exhibition in Milan.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $6,270 for Sulphur Crested Cockatoos - 'Which Polly Wants a Cracker' sold by Philips Auctions Australia in May 2008.
