Edward Cairns Officer, a landscape painter in oil, was born in Swan Hill, Victoria in 1871. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School, 1893-94 and in Paris at the Academie Julian. Officer received advice and help from the French landscape painter Henri Harpignies in Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon, Royal Institute, London, and Royal Society of British Artists, 1892-1904. He was first president of the Australian Art Association from 1912-21, and a trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne from 1916-21.
