An art scholarship from Grammar sent Brisbane born Jan Jorgensen to Central Technical Art College for 2 years where she achieved credits in painting, printmaking and figure drawing. Her tutor in perspective, colour study, and drawing was the great landscape artist William Robinson. Several years freelancing followed work as feature artist on the Truth newspaper. Jorgensen founded Queensland. Wildlife Artists Society and exhibited in solo and mixed exhibitions for several years before a move to the inner city in 1990 to manage galleries. Old favourites Van Gogh, Lautrec and Kandinsky influenced the artist as did the spirit and vibrancy of William Robinson and Vincent Brown. Her first solo exhibition of these paintings was at Waterfront Place 1994 which was a sellout, so another followed in 1995, then Balmain Gaol Sydney 1998. From 2008 - 2021 she held 10 solo exhibitions at Kiln and Lethbridge Galleries. Her work days ended with sketching trips through inner-city suburbs and back lanes, and transforming late sunlight became a hallmark of Jorgensen’s work. Numerous awards included Suncorp, RQAS, L J Hooker, and finalists included Aberdare, Tattersalls(9 times), ‘Seeing Brisbane’ MOB, and 2023 ‘ Purpose Built- Architecture for a Better Future,’ at the State Library Queensland. ‘Changing Places Brisbane’ was published by Macmillan 2002 - 2nd and 3rd editions in 2012 and 2017.

According to our records which cover the last 50 years, only 3 works by this artist have been sold by auction, of the 6 works offered for sale.
