Born in Kyogle, New South Wales in 1934, Rod Milgate studied at the East Sydney Technical College. After a period as an actor and writer, he ultimately became Professor of the Visual Arts School of the City Art Institute, University of NSW, having obtained a PhD in 1989. He won many awards for his work, including the Blake Prize for Religious Art three times.
