Born in Staffordshire, England in 1857, Thoman Dean arrived in Australia in 1877, which became his home for the rest of his life. Dean lived in Kogarah, New South Wales for most of his life, and worked as a fettler for the railways until he retired in the early 1920s, but still managed to produce a large number of paintings during that period. An amateur painter, he was a member of the Art Society (Sydney) later to become the Royal Art Society of New South Wales where he exhibited from 1893 to 1935. His work was included in a folio of paintings presented to the Duke & Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. After retiring, Dean devoted his time to art.
