Born in Melbourne in 1892, Cyril Lander studied Applied Arts at the Gordon Institute of Technology Geelong, and became a painter and furniture maker. A member of the Perth Society of Artists and Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts, he won the Hotchin prize for his watercolours in 1957 and 1959. His paintings ranged through watercolours, oils and sometimes charcoal. His subjects spanned Australian landscapes to those of Europe. Cyril Lander also designed and made classical furniture in Queen Anne, Sheraton and other styles, and repaired antique furniture.

We have records of art auction sales by Cyril Lander from 1976 and in total 142 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 110 (77%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $12,650 for The Pensioner Barracks, Perth sold by McKenzies Auctioneers in November 2002.
