The son of a commercial artist, designer and watercolourist, Harry Richardson was born in England in 1878. He studied art in London, where he won the Queen's Prize for life drawing, and at L'Academie Julian in Paris. In 1908 Richardson arrived in New Zealand; for the first three years he taught life drawing at the Wellington Technical College Art School, and then became head of the art school at Palmerston North. He developed an interest in Maori life and mythology. He exhibited his drawings, paintings and etchings widely in New Zealand and in Sydney.
