Born in Tasmania in 1956 Michael McWilliams is a painter and furniture restorer. He trained as an art teacher at the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education (now the University of Tasmania) and received a Diploma of Education and a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Art) in 1978, majoring in printmaking. He was a teacher for four years, and after dabbling with painting antique furniture he became a full time artist painting in acrylics and oil on canvas and panels, holding his first solo exhibition in Melbourne in 1995. Since then he has held over 25 solo exhibitions and participatedin a smilar number of group exhibitions in Tasmania in the Australian east coast capital cities. In 2016 he was a finalist in the Archibald Prize at Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney and a finalist in the Wynne Prize in 2008 and 2010.
