Architect, painter and army officer William Thomas Lyttleton was born in England in 1784 and arrived in Sydney in 1809 as a Captain in the British Army before moving to Launceston as a police magistrate. In 1825 he was granted over 1300 acres near Carrick and the locality became known as Lyttleton. He designed houses and painted pastoral scenes. His work was included the touring exhibition The Art of Gardening in Colonial Australia by the Australian Gallery Directors Council Staff in 1979, but the Australian Art Sales Digest records only 3 works by William Lyttleton offered for sale in the last 40 years. His son Thomas Hamilton, was also a painter of landscapes and racing scenes.
