Born in New South Wales in 1938, Michael Johnson studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney. He exhibited in several group shows prior to his departure for England in 1965. While in England he taught at the Croydon Art School in London. He returned to Australia in 1967 and held his first one-man exhibition in Sydney the same year. The following year his work was selected to be exhibited at the UNESCO exhibition in France and in the 1968 Sao Paulo Biennale. Johnson's work is represented in the National Collection, Canberra and in several major state and private collections. He lived in New York from 1969 to 1975 after which he returned to Australia.
