Photographer and collector John Beattie was born in Aberdeen, Scotland 1859 and was taught photography by his father. He arrived in Tasmania in 1878. He worked at the Anson Bros. photographic business in the 1880s, and later purchased the business, renaming it Beatties Studio. As a collector he accumulated a trove of prints, paintings and drawings of Tasmania, which were purchased by the Launceston City Council in 1927, three years before his death. Historical photographs by him are also held by the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery.
