Born in 1870 at St Pancras, London, Herbert Hepburn Calvert emigrated to New Zealand with his family in the mid 1880s, and after a short stay in that country they relocated to Australia in 1887. Calvert painted watercolour studies of Australian bird life, often large scale depictions, and was active from at least 1910 until his death in 1923. The works of Herbert Hepburn Calvert (1870-1923) are often confused with thse of his son, Harold Hepburn Calvert (1906-63) due to the similarity in names and styles. Dates and signatures, however, greatly assist in correct identification. Paintings dated after 1923 are the work of the son and often signed 'H. Hep. Calvert' or 'H. Hepburn Calvert'
