John Thomas (Thomas) Baines was born in Norfolk, England in 1820 and apprenticed to a coach painter. He left for Africa aged 22 working there as a scenic and portrait artist. He then travelled to Australia in 1855 as official artist with an expedition organised by the Royal Geographical Society.

We have records of art auction sales by Thomas Baines from 1974 and in total 9 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 6 (67%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $57,500 for Gorge of the Southern Branch of Depot Creek and the Plain Over Which it Flows, c. 1856 sold by Sotheby's in April 1997.
