Melbourne doctor, artist and art collector, Hal Hattam was born in 1913, in Edinburgh and came to Australia from his native Scotland at the age of seven. After qualifying as a doctor and establishing a medical practice in Melbourne, he began to paint with no formal training in art. He worked with Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams, John Perceval and Charles Blackman and between 1962 and 1994 he held about 14 solo exhibitions . His contacts with other artists of the period helped him build up an exceptional collection of the works of Melbourne artists of the 1950s. He died in 1994, and in 2003, a tribute exhibition of Hattam’s work was held at Heide Museum of Modern Art.
