Born in Sydney in 1948, Preston studied in Sydney and Newcastle and became known as a painter of wildlife and rural subjects in oil, acrylic, watercolour; pencil drawings and etchings. He has won many awards and is represented overseas in the United Nations headquarters, Geneva.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $13,200 for Near Taronga Park, a View of the Harbour sold by Sotheby's in May 2004. This year one work has been offered for sale.
