Born in Ireland about 1796, Richard Read, Junior arrived in Australia as a free settler in 1819. Apparently estranged from his father, Richard Read, Senior, he set up as a portrait and historical painter, advertising in the 'Sydney Gazette' in 1821. Read moved to Victoria in the late 1850s where he died in 1862.
