About James Bowkett Coe
Herbert James (Jim) Bowkett Coe was born in Timaru in 1917. He received formal art training at the Canterbury University College School of Art, but developed his own style, which departed from conventional painting traditions. During World War II Coe served in the Pacific and recorded his expeiences with paintings and drawings. After the war he became active in the arts community, and later established the School of Design at the Wellington Polytechnic.
