Born c1833, Walter Deverell was chief draughtsman for the New Zealand Lands and Survey Department from 1882-1915 becoming Chief Draughtsman. He painted a number of topographical scenes of New Zealand and exhibited with the Otago Art Society in 1876 but is not listed as exhibiting again until 1884-88 and 1904-08. He also exhibited at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876 and the New Zealand International Exhibition in Christchurch of 1906-07.
