About Harden Sydney Melville
Engraver, lithographer and watercolour painter, Harden Sydney Melville was born in London in 1824. A self taught artist, he had three paintings hung in the Royal Academy’s summer show between 1837 and 1841. He was appointed artist on the survey ships Fly and Bramble and spent time sketching Australia while surveying Australia from 1842 to 1846. Many of these sketches were later published as lithographs.
