Born in Austria in 1908, Frank Gross studied in London and Paris prior to his arrival in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1934 where he worked as a designer in a fur factory. After settling in Christchurch he became a painter and a tutor at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. He founded the Town & Country Society of Artists in Christchurch in 1962, but died suddnely in 1963 just before the Society's first exhibition was held.
