Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1879, Cecil Kelly studied in Christchurch under Petrus Van der Velden and in Europe. He married fellow artist Elizabeth Abbott in 1908 and they settled in New Brighton. Their home became a meeting place for artists. A teacher and landscape painter in oils, Kelly exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts and in the UK with the Royal Academy.
