Born in Tasmania in 1863, Charles Ritchie gave up his career as a barrister to study art in Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1895, as well as in Scotland, Liverpool and the West Country, until about 1940. He spent some time in Tasmania after World War I. Charles Ritchie's portrait paintings are represented at Launceston's art gallery and in the Royal Collection at Windsor castle.
