Born in Glasgow in 1862, Colquhoun arrived in Australia in 1876 and studied at the National Gallery School. He was a member of the Australian Art Association, Twenty Melbourne Painters and the Australian Academy of Art, secretary of the Artists' Society and Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria. He worked as the art critic for the Melbourne 'Age' during the 1930s. Note: The signature A. Colquhoun is Alexander Colquhoun. The signature A. D. Colquhoun is his son, Archibald Douglas Colquhoun
