Born in New York in 1906, Margel Hinder studied sculpture at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in USA prior to her arrival in Australia in 1934 with her husband, artist Frank Hinder. She was a camoflage artist during World War II, after which she became one of Sydney's best known sculptors in the modernist abstract style, initially in wood, then later in metal, winning numerous awards, and her commissioned works were widely exhibited. In 1966 a restropsective of her won and her husband's work was held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

The earliest auction listing we have for Margel Hinder is in 1989 and in total 21 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 18 (86%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $184,091 for Maquette (Adelaide Telecommunications Building) sold by Deutscher and Hackett in May 2023.
