Born in Napier, New Zealand in 1921, Aston Greathead is a self taught artist who began his career as a signwriter and didn't start painting until 1960. He paints landscapes in oil, acylic and watercolour, usually of the South Island. In 1966 after only six years of full time painting he won the Dawson Hallmark award sponsored by Sir Henry Kelliher. He exhibited at the Canterbury Society of Arts, and in 1972 his works were featured on Save the Children Fund Christmas cards
Aston Greathead is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1987 of 403, of which 355 (88%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,252 for Barneys Rock, Kaikoura Coast sold by International Art Centre in October 2007. This year one work has been offered for sale.
