Born in Scotland in 1849, William Smaill arrived in New Zealand in 1858 on the vessel 'Strathallan'., where he was a farmer in the Kaitangata district of Otago. . He exhibited his watercolours with the Otago Art Society from 1882-90. Smaill died in 1926. His work is represented in the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington.
Note: there were two passengers by the name of William Smaill on the 'Strathallan'. The other William Smaill (1839-1905) was a civil engineer. He was appointed District Engineer Of Roads To The Otago Gold Fields. Engineer In Charge Of 5th Otago 1870-72 and Southland 1874 Surveyed Mouth Of Clutha,.
