Erwin Steiner with his wife and son fled communist Hungary for Dunedin New Zealand where he worked as an artist in an advertising agency. In Dunedin he also established Cafe Budapest, a small intimate coffee and eating house serving Hungarian food, which was the heart of the local Hungarian community. Mainly painting in oils, his work was eerily dark and sullen capturing the mood of his life at that time.
