Born in England in 1871, Lewis Jarvis Harvey arrived in Australia in 1874. He studied at Brisbane Technical College and privately in Queensland. A sculptor and ceramic artist, he established the L. J. Harvey School in 1937 and was Queensland's first art potter. He was very influential on the art scene in Queensland, where, after his death the L J Harvey prize was established.
