John Paine started working as a photographer in 1869 in Tamworth, NSW, and moved to Sydney in 1874 where he became a well known photographer. He exhibited photographs at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879, winning a silver medal and at the International Colonial & Industrial Exhibition, Amsterdam, 1883 and at the International Exhibition Calcutta in 1885, winning a silver medal. He also travelled with the Australian Squadron and recorded the establishment of the British Protectorate over South-East New Guinea in 1884. He also photographed the street decorations for Federation in Sydney in 1901. However, he made his living selling picturesque views of Sydney, and the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. His work was featured in the exhibition Treasures of Light, Macleay Museum, Sydney University in 1998 which included work from twenty-one photographic collections owned by the Museum.
