Born in England in 1844, Daplyn studied there and in France before his arrival in Australia in 1881. He was the first art instructor of the Royal Art Society School in Sydney where he taught such artists as Charles Conder and Sydney Long. His own paintings were usually landscapes of the Sydney area.
