Albert Ernest Newbury was born in Middle Park, Victoria in 1891. From 1909-1914 Newbury studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School under Frederick McCubbin and Bernard Hall. He later taught drawing at the N. G. V. from 1939-1941. He married colleague and fellow student, Ruth Trumble, and they built a home at Eltham, Victoria, where he did most of his painting. Popular impressionism and the tonal impressionism taught him by Max Meldrum were evenly combined in the lyrical landscapes for which he became best known.

The total number of works by Albert Newbury offered for sale by auction since 1966 is 173, of which 124 (72%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,800 for View of the Valley and Distant Mountains sold by Leonard Joel in March 2016. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Albert Newbury are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
