Born in Christchurch in 1930, John Bevan Ford is a contemporary Maori painter, sculptor, wood carver and lecturer. After attending Wellington Teacher’s College, he studied art at Dunedin College. He was an art lecturer at Hamilton Teachers Training College and in 1974 moved to Palmerston North to lecture at Massey University in 1974. He became a full time artist in 1987 and in 1990 he presented a series of lectures about Maori and New Zealand art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 1998, he was artist-in-residence at the British Museum, London.
