The earliest influence in Frances Duffy's life was the Lindsay arts family in Creswick, Victoria, where she lived from 1939 to 1949. The Lindsays saw her potential, and in 1940, at age 13, she began lessons with Isobel Lindsay in the Lindsay home and studio. The Lindsays fired her passion for painting, setting her off on that career. At sixteen, Frances Duffy held her first exhibition of watercolours in Creswick, and commenced studies under May Grigg and Geoff Mainwaring, an official war artist, at the Ballarat School of Mines (School of Art). She then studied in Melbourne under Sir William Dargie at the National Gallery School for three years from 1949-1951, learning the tonal impressionist painting techniques of Max Meldrum; then three more years with Dargie's select group of private students. Painters training in Dargie's studio at the time included Fred Williams, John Brack, Shirley Bourne, Ray Horsfield and Laurie Dawes. In 1972 Frances Duffy won the Tom Roberts award for her painting "Woman in a Black Dress". Frances is inspired by the French impressionist painters including Monet, Manet and Vuillard. Their use of colour, soft tones, and light is evident in her work.
