A New Zealand artist born in Christchurch in 1877, Annie Elizabeth Abbott studied in Christchurch under G H Elliott and P Van der Velden, from 1892 to 1902 at the Canterbury School of Fine Art. She continued her studies when she travelled to Europe in the early 1900s. From 1899 she exhibited as 'A. E. Abbott' until her marriage to artist C. F. Kelly in 1908 when she signed her work 'A Elizabeth Kelly'. She exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts, at the Paris Salon and Royal Academy. Noted for her portraits, she won a silver medal at the Paris Salon in 1934. She was the first New Zealand woman to receive the CBE for Services to Art.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $12,661 for Couple at River's Edge sold by Dunbar Sloane in November 2005.
