Born in Melbourne in 1902, Jean Sutherland was a member of an artistic family, and studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourn. She travelled and studied in Europe from 1925 to 1927. A portrait and landscape artist her only exhibition was held at the Seddon Gallery in 1944. A retrospective exhibition was held at Deutscher Gallery, Melbourne in 1979, the year after her death.
