Frederick Nixon was born in England in 1803, and arrived at Port Adelaide in 1838, having been appointed assistant surveyor for South Australia, and later joined the police force. A cartoonist, sketcher, etcher, journalist and surveyor he contributed articles to local magazines and newspapers and in 1845 he published Views on Adelaide and its Vicinity. , 12 etchings of Adelaide and its environs. He was also a fine watercolourist and also did comic drawings. In 1846 he left for Mauritius where he worked as a surveyor and published sketches. He is recorded as passing away in Mauritius in 1860.
