Born in Sydney in 1915, Kingsley is best known as a portrait painter. He studied at the East Sydney Technical College and the Julian Ashton School, and was a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW. While hardly a household name in Australian art, Garrett Kingsley enjoyed a long and successful career as a painter of naturalist landscapes, in the manner of his friend Lance Solomon and of gently exoticised nudes, reminiscent of the work of Arthur Murch from the 1930s to the 1970s. He was a Fellow of the Royal Art Society and a member of the Australian Artists Society. He won both the Bathurst Prize (1963) and the Blue Mountains Prize (1963).
