Born in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1952 Hilarie Mais studied in England prior to her arrival in Australia in 1982. A sculptor and installation artist, her first solo exhibition was in New York in 1977, and since then she has exhibited widely both within Australia and internationally, including the a solo exhibition Hilarie Mais at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney in 2017 and the survey exhibitions Hilarie Mais: Survey of Works 1974–2004 at the Drill Hall Gallery, Australian National University, Canberra in 2004. She has also exhibited widely in commercial solo and group shows throughout Australia. Hilarie Mais was awarded the Blake Prize for Religious Art in 1994, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2000 and an Australia Council Visual Arts Fellowship for the period 2012–2014. She lives and works in Sydney.
