Born in Germany in 1838, Bernhardt Holtermann left Germany to escape military service, and sailed to Australia. He went gold prospecting in Hill End, New South Wales, where he met the photographers Beaufoy Merlin and his assistant Charles Bayliss. Holtermann sponsored them to take a series of photographs of the settled areas of New South Wales and Victoria. These were used to promote the colonies overseas and won prizes at international exhibitions - Philadelphia in 1876 and Paris in 1878. In 1882 Holtermann was elected a member of the NSW parliament.
