Born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1868 Gordon B. Coutts studied in Glasgow, at the Royal Art School in London and the Academie Julian in Paris. He moved to Melbourne, Australia in 1891 where he won the Student prize at the National Gallery School in 1893 and exhibited at the Victorian Artists Society. He then lived in Sydney from 1896 where he taught at the Art Society of New South Wales, before returning back to Europe in 1899. For health reasons in the early 1900s he moved to the United States where he became a frequent exhibitor at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. In 1920 he travelled to Tangiers, Morocco where, dressed as an Arab, he passed from tribe to tribe observing and capturing the lifestyle, customs and practices of the village people and Bedouins. He died in San Francisco in 1937.
