Gwynith Norton was born in Adelaide, South Australia between 1900 and 1910 and trained at the Australian School of Arts and Crafts and the Society of Arts, SA. and was a member of the Royal Society of Arts, South Australia. She painted in both oil and watercolours, the latter of mainly South Australian landscape studies and also practiced china painting. She is recorded in Adelaide newspapers as holding an exhibition of her china painting in Adelaide in the 1930s and another in 1951. One of her major works was the design of a floral carpet constructed on the lawns of the State War Memorial, Adelaide, SA as part of the 1936 Centenary celebrations, and afterwards the Governor of SA, Sir Winston Dugan commissioned her to produce a painting after this monumental work.
