George Chance was born in Liverpool, England in 1885 and worked in retail photography stores in London before migrating to Dunedin, New Zealand in 1909. He again worked in retail photography, but within 10 years was exhibiting and selling his photographs He became the leading exponent of pictorial photography in New Zealand, and according to William Main, author of George Chance: Photographs the artist sold over 30,000 prints in his lifetime.
George Chance is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1994 of 544, of which 470 (86%) were sold.
