Born in England in 1819, John Gully was originally a draughtsman in an iron foundry. He travelled to New Plymouth, New Zealand in 1852, but moved to Nelson in 1860 due to the New Zealand Wars. He became drawing master at Nelson College, New Zealand's oldest state school. He is believed to have moved to Australia in the 1870s where he became a member of the Victorian Academy of Fine Arts. He established his reputation in Australia from the engravings published in the 'Australasian Sketcher' in 1873-74 and the Picturesque Atlas of Australia in 1883-1886. He was described by the New Zealand Herald in 1926 as 'the greatest landscape painter of this country".
