Born in 1896, Tempe Manning studied in New South Wales and at the Academie Julian in Paris, returning to Australia in 1914. She began exhibiting with the Royal Art Society in 1916 and later with the Society of Artists. From 1930 to 1953 she was a regular contributor to the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize exhibitions. In 1945 a portrait of Senator Dorothy Tangey by Tempe Manning was rejected by the Federal Government after being commissioned for hanging in King's Hall, Canberra.
