Born in Gisborne, New Zealand in 1959, Josephine Davis was an artist from an early age, encouraged by her mother. After leaving school in 1977 she worked worked in an art gallery until 1988. She travelled to Europe the following year, studying at Blake College, then moving to Paris for several months. Later in the year she returned to England to attend the Royal Watercolour Society’s Summer School in Kent. Returning to New Zealand she won the Tauranga National Art Award in 1990. her first solo exhibition was in Auckland in 1994, after which the commitments of a young family reduced the amount of time she could spend pursuing her career.
